1 cup sugar
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup shortening
3 eggs
4 cups flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Cream sugars and shortening. Add eggs and vanilla.
Combine flour, baking soda and salt and add to mixture.
Roll out dough to 11/2 " thickness and spread with the following filling:
1 cup or 1 lb. dates, cut in pieces.
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup sugar
Combine the above ingredients and cook until tender and fairly thick. Set aside to cool before using. Spread on cookie dough and roll up like a jelly roll. Wrap in plastic wrap. Set in a cool place overnight. Cut in thin slices and bake at 350º.
