4 large toes garlic --- finely chopped
1/2 c. olive oil
1 large can tomato paste (12 oz.)
1 tomato paste can size of water
2-3 large cans diced tomatoes
or 3 qts. canned tomatoes
or fresh Italian plum tomatoes --- chopped with seeds
1/4 to 1/2 c. fresh basil leaves --- chopped
or 1 tbsp. dried basil
1 heaping tsp. oregano (too much makes sauce bitter)
1 tbsp sugar
1/4 c. wine (optional)

Saute garlic in olive oil. Do not burn.
Add the can of tomato paste to the garlic/oil mix and stir until it is a brownish color.
Add the water and diced tomatoes.
mix all ingredients and simmer.
If you add hamburger, brown it well and keep it in small pieces. Drain the hamburger well and add to the sauce.
Simmer for a couple of hours.
Add 1 can tomato puree at the end.
