1/2 c shortening
1 c sugar
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp lemon extract
2 eggs
2 c sifted cake flour
1 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp soda
1/4 tsp salt
1 c sour milk

Directions:
Directions:
Sift the shortening to soften. Gradually add sugar, and cream together until light and fluffy. Add extracts. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating well after each.

Sift flour, baking powder, soda and slat together 3 times; add to creamed mixture alternately with milk, a small amount at a time. Beat after each addition until smooth.

Bake in 2 paper-lines 1x1 1/2 inch round pans in moderate oven (350º) about 25 minutes.

Put layers together with Lemon Filling; Frost with Seven-minute Frosting.

Lemon Filling:
Mix 1/2 c sugar, 2 tbsp cornstarch, add 3/4 c cold water; blend. Add grated peel of 1 lemon; cook over low heat till thick. Slowly add to mixture of 1 beaten egg yolk, juice of 1 lemon, 2 tbsp butter; continue cooking 2 minutes. Remove from heat; cool.
