The Byars family loved to make homemade ice cream. The women in the family would all congregate in the kitchen and put together a cylinder of milky concoction while they laughed and talked. The men would be on the old wooden back porch at my grandma mom’s house and chip ice off of an ice block that was bought at the icehouse next to the packinghouse across the street. We kids would be running around the house playing monsters or hide and seek waiting for the ice cream churning to begin. See when the cylinder full of the ice cream makings came out of the house, then it was placed in a wooden tub, and ice and rock salt was placed in the tub around the cylinder, then newspapers, and one of grandma mom’s dishtowels was placed on top of the ice cream maker, and one grandchild at a time took turns sitting on the dishtowel, while daddy, or one of my uncles would turn the crank and make the cylinder spin around the ice. I tried to figure out what the purpose was for sitting on the ice cream maker other than it was fun, and the only thing I can think of is that it held the cylinder down. I do know that nothing tasted as good as homemade ice cream, and listening to my Uncles and daddy talk about old pranks that they pulled, or say “remember when”, or remember ol”?
