Bill would grow everything in his garden just to see it grow, and then wanted Dorrie to can, pickle, and eat the harvest of the garden as quickly as he picked it. One year Dorrie decided to try to preserve the bounty. She and Bill bought metal shelves to store the delicious jars of goodies on. Bill’s garden was brought into Dories’ kitchen, and Dorrie cut, boiled, canned, and preserved all that came through the door. I remember peeling pumpkins for pumpkin pie, and Dorrie taking a hand at making tomato sauce. The heat of the Santa Anna winds blowing outside, and the steam of the jarred pickles boiling in the water heating the inside of the kitchen. Those were wonderful and hot memories.
