One of my favorite cooking experiences with the Herring family was at Christmastime, when the two matriarchs of the family Grandma Nana, and Grandma Herring decided to make tamales, and they invited me in to join in. The kitchen was filled with sites and smells uncommon for the Herring family home. Masa, corn husks, and pots of bubbling meats greeted me at Dorrie and Bill’s ranch. The fireplace was going and the kitchen was cozy with smells and sites of history being made. As you know these two women seldom came together to make a meal. I felt honored to be a part of it.
