3 squares unsweetened chocolate
2 tsp. baking soda
2 1/4 cups sifted cake flour
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup butter
3 large eggs
1 1/2 tsp vanilla
1 cup sour cream
1 cup boiling water
2 1/4 cups firmly packed brown sugar

Preparation time: 45 minutes

Preheat oven to 350º.

Melt chocolate in a small bowl, cool.
Grease and flour two 9 1/2" inch layer pans. (I use 3 pans because it some times spills over with just two.) Sift flour, baking soda and salt together. Beat butter until soft. Add brown sugar and eggs; beat with mixer until light and fluffy. Beat in vanilla and cooled melted chocolate. Stir in dry ingredients alternately with sour cream, beating well after each addition. Stir in boiling water. Batter will be thin. Pour into prepared pans.

Bake at 350º for 35 minutes or until centers spring back when lightly pressed with finger tips. Cool layers in pans on wire rack. Ice with favorite frosting.
