1c. finely chopped nuts
2 1/2c. flour
41/2tsp. baking powder
1tsp. salt
1 1/2c. sugar
2/3c. shortening
1 1/4c. milk
1 tsp. vanilla
2/3c. egg whites, unbeaten

Directions:
Directions:
Place finely chopped nut evenly over bottoms of 2 well greased, lightly floured 9 inch round layer pans. Sift together the flour, baking powder, salt and sugar in a mixing bowl. Add shortening, milk, and vanilla. Beat 1 1/2 minutes. Then add the egg whites and beat for another 1 1/2 minutes. Spoon 1/4 of the batter carefully into each nut lined pans; using about 1/2 the batter. Sprinkle 1 ounce of grated sweet or semi-sweet chocolate into each pan. Spoon remaining batter into pans, spreading carefully so chocolate isn't disturbed. Bake in 350 oven for 35-40 minutes. Cool completely and frost layers, nut side up with chocolate icing. Spread frosting between and on sides of the cake, but frost only 1/2 inch in center. Decorated chocolate frosting with reserved 1/3 cup white frosting, thinning with water a teaspoon at a time as necessary.
