2 1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. dark syrup
1/2 c. hot water
1/2 tsp. vinegar
2 stiffly beaten egg whites
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/2 c. chopped nuts (pecans, black walnuts, English walnuts - your choice)

Directions:
Directions:
Combine sugar, syrup, water, and vinegar. Cook over moderate heat. Cook until it forms a soft ball in cold water. Remove from heat, add vanilla, and cool slightly. Then add gradually to stiffly beaten egg whites, beating constantly until thick enough to spread on cake layers without running off. Place nuts on top of each cake layer after spreading icing on them. Spread icing on top and sides of cake.
