1 c self rising corn meal
1/2 c flour
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp sugar
1 egg
3/4-1 cup buttermilk
3 tbs grated onion
1/2 tsp black pepper

(if not using self rising flour add 1 tsp baking powder and 1 tsp baking soda)

Directions:

Mix all ingredients until well combined. Drop by rounded teaspoonful into hot oil in frying pan or deep fryer. Cook on each side until golden brown, drain on papertowels.

Mema would always make fried fish (whatever kind had been caught) hush puppies and milk gravy (to be eaten on white bread) when the whole family was there for dinner. One of my favorite dinners.
