1 loaf of dense Italian or French bread. Actually any loaf of bread will do but I don't use sourdough.

Freshly grated Parmesan or Romano cheese

Butter

Slice bread lengthwise and into individual pieces.
Melt butter. Cover top of bread with butter and lots of cheese. Broil until golden brown.

Another good topping is to mix mayonnaise with Romano or Parmesan cheese and add some whole grain mustard and broil. If you use a baguette, cut into small circles, cover, broil and serve as an hors d'oeuvres.
