"I have long believed that good food, good eating is all about risk. Whether we're talking about unpasteurized Stilton, raw oysters or working for organized crime 'associates,' food, for me, has always been an adventure."--Anthony Bourdain
This recipe for American Chow Mein, by Joan Johnson, is from Sjostrom Family Cookbook,
one of the cookbooks created at FamilyCookbookProject.com. We help
families or individuals create heirloom cookbook treasures.
1 c. uncooked rice 3 c. hot water 1 1/2 lb. hamburger 1/4 c. diced onion 1 c. diced celery 1 can cream of mushroom soup 2 T. brown sugar 1/4 c. soy sauce 1 small can mushrooms
Pour hot water over rice in large casserole and let stand while browning meat. Add onions and celery to meat while browning. Drain off excess fat. Mix all ingredients together in casserole and bake uncovered for 50 minutes at 350º. Stir, cover and bake an additional 20 to 25 minutes. Serve with chow mein noodles.
This recipe, also in the Scandian Grove cookbook, is from Grandma Cora. Our family has enjoyed it for many years!
