4 c. sliced tart apples (about 4 medium-sized apples)
2/3 to 3/4 c. packed brown sugar
1/2 c. all-purpose or self-rising flour
1/2 c. oats (regular not quick-cooking)
3/4 tsp. ground cinnamon
3/4 tsp. ground nutmeg
1/3 c. butter, softened

Directions:
Preheat oven to 375º. Grease an 8x8x2-inch square pan. Arrange apples in greased pan. Mix remaining ingredients together and sprinkle over apples.

Bake until topping is golden brown and apples are tender, about 30 minutes.

Serve warm and, if desired (and who doesn't), with ice cream or whipped cream -- either sweetened or unsweetened.

This is an old favorite that I have used many times. It can be baking while you are eating dinner for an easy dessert. I recall serving it for a dinner for Max and Marlyn, to her delight. It is perfect in the fall.
