Ingredients: 1 sleeve saltine crackers (and a few extra) 2 sticks butter (NOT margerine) 1 cup brown sugar, firmly packed/dark brown works well also 1 12- ounce bag milk chocolate chips 1/2 cup chopped and toasted pecans

Directions:Preheat oven to 325º. Line a rimmed cookie sheet with foil and spray with nonstick spray (I like crisco). Place saltines in a single layer, covering the entire pan. You will need a few extra crackers to fill in empty spaces, or pcs of crackers. Heat butter and brown sugar in a small heavy saucepan . Bring to a boil and boil three minutes, stirring occasionally. Pour mixture evenly and very carefully over the saltines and spread to the edges. Bake for around 15 minutes...Don't let the caramel mixture darken and burn. Watch closely. Remove pan from oven and immediately sprinkle with the chocolate chips. When chips soften, spread to edges with a spatula or broad knife. Now sprinkle with the toasted pecans. Chill for at least 30 minutes and break into uneven pcs. No one can ever guess that saltines are the base of this treat! You may decide you need more or less of any ingredient. Is almost impossible to screw up unless you burn the pecans or overcook the base. |

Notes: The original recipe called for 350 degree oven for 20 minutes, but I found the caramel burned at this temperature and heat. Experiment with your own oven til you are confident with your own settings. This is outrageously good!! Tastes like a cross between a candy bar and a cookie. So easy to make! Editor's note: The summer these first hit the scene at Grandfather Mountain, Robbie stored them in a golden tin leftover from some holiday cookie collection. She was NOT allowed to let that tin get empty. These cookies are crazy addictive and make a great present if you can get them out of the house without half eaten by family! Now 2023…the family calls this “crack” because it is so addictive!
