1/2 c. Crisco
1-1/2 c. sugar
2 eggs
1 oz. red food coloring
1 t. vanilla
2 t. cocoa
1 tsp. salt
1 c. buttermilk
2-1/4 c. cake flour
1 t. baking soda
1 T. vinegar

3 T. flour
1 c. milk
1 c. sugar
3 t. vanilla
1/2 c. softened butter
1/2 c. softened margarine

Preheat oven to 350.
CAKE: Cream shortening, sugar, and eggs until creamy. Make a paste of food coloring and cocoa and add to mixture. Add buttermilk alternately w/ sifted flower and salt. Add vanilla. Add soda to vinegar, but hold over bowl as it foams. Then add soda and vinegar, blending instead of beating.
For two layers, bake at 350 25-30 minutes. Add ten minutes or more baking time for a single layer pan. Cake is done when inserted toothpick comes out clean.

FROSTING: Cook flour and milk over med. heat until thick, stirring constantly. Then cool completely, uncovered. Cream sugar, butter and vanilla until very fluffy. Add to cooled first mixture and beat until well blended (should be like whipped cream).
