Sift together:
1 cup sugar
4 tbsp. unsweetened dark cocoa
1 tsp. baking powder
11/2 tsp. salt
1 cup flour
1 tsp. baking soda (level)

Then add:
1 cup hot water
4 tbsp. melted butter
Break 1 unbeaten egg & add it at the last minute before you beat thoroughly. Then add 1 tsp. vanilla

Bake at 325 degrees until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean.

This makes a small cake, about 1 layer. Double it for a larger one.
