1 c. shortening(may use part butter),
2 tbl. sugar,
2 c. flour,
1 tsp. salt,
Mix as pie crust until crumbly. Pat 1/2 inch thick firmly into a large oblong cake pan and bake at 375 degrees until lightly brown.

second layer:
6-8 large apples,
1 c. sugar,
Cover with enough water to start cooking, add sugar and cook until clear and tender. Spread over the baked crust.

Third Layer:
Make a custard of:
3 egg yolks,
2 c. milk,
3 tbl. cornstarch,
3 tbl. sugar,
1 tsp. vanilla,

Directions:
Cook until thick, cool slightly, and pour over the apple layer. Beat 3 egg whites until stiff. add 1/2 c. sugar and spread meringue over the custard layer. Place in 375º oven untill lightly browned. Cut in 2 inch squares and serve with or without whipped cream. Best served warm but very good served cold.
