1 pkg yeast
2-3 tbsp warm water
5 cups plain flour
3-5 tbsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1 tsp soda
1 cup Crisco shortening
2 cups buttermilk

Directions:
Directions:
Dissolve yeast in water. Sift flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and soda together
(Measure shortening by putting one cup of water in measuring cup. Spoon Crisco into cup until water level measures 2 cups. Pour water off.)
Cut shortening into flour and mix with a fork.
Stir in yeast mixture and buttermilk.
Roll out on floured board; cut into biscuits and place them on ungreased cookie sheet. Brush tops with melted butter if desired.

Bake at 400º for 10-20 minutes until golden brown.

Dough will keep in refrigerator for several days but allow biscuits to rise before baking. Baked biscuits freeze well.
