1 gallon big mouth jar
Whole cucumbers, washed and dried
2 Tablespoons course salt
1 Tablespoon alum
6 Tablespoons pickling spice, may use less, 3 - 4 Tablespoons
1/2 gallon pure apple cider vinegar
1 cup sugar for every layer of cucumbers

Mix vinegar, salt, pickling spice and alum. Pour over packed jar of whole cucumbers. Cover with lid. Let stand 6 weeks in a cool place. Empty into sink. Wipe jar clean with a paper towel. Dry cucumbers with a paper towel, cleaning all spices off. Slice. Start with a full cup of sugar on bottom. Layer 2 cups of cucumbers. Repeat, layering 1 cup of sugar after each layer of cucumbers until jar is full, with sugar on top layer. Allow to rest. Stir good the next day. Set aside with lid on in a cool place. Ready to eat about 2 weeks later.
