Dough:
2/3 c shortening, creamed
1 c firmly packed brown sugar
1-1/2 c flour
1/4 tsp soda
pinch salt
1-1/2 c oatmeal

Filling:
1 package dates cut up (about a cup)
1/2 c brown sugar
1-1/2 c water

Directions:
Directions:
Dough: Mix ingredients to crumb consistency. Use 2/3 of these crumbs on bottom of pan. Use the remaining 1/3 on top of filling.

Filling: Boil all ingredients until thick. Cool. Spread over the crumbs in the pan. Top with reserved crumbs. Bake at 375º until golden brown, about 30-35 min. Cool. Cut in squares.
