Gramma Jenny's Almond Squares Recipe

1/2 c. sugar
1 c. sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
3 egg yolks
1 egg yolk
1 c. grated almond paste
1 c. flour
2 TB. lemon juice
1 c. shortening (part butter)
1/8 tsp. almond extract
3 egg whites
2 TB. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla

Mix and press the 1st 5 in a 9X13 inch pan. Bake @ 325 for 15-18 minutes. Beat the 3 egg whites till stiff and 2 TB. sugar and 1 tsp. vanilla. Set aside. Combine the sugar, egg yolks, almond paste, lemon juice, and extract. Add that to the egg white mixture. Spread over the baked crust. Sprinkle with the nuts and coconut. Bake @ 325 for another 25-30 minutes.
