1/2 cup shortening
2 cups sugar
2 eggs
4 cups shredded apples
2 cups plus 2 T. flour
2 tsp. soda
2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. salt
1 cup nuts
1 tsp. vanilla

BUTTER SAUCE
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup half & half
1 tsp vanilla or rum

Directions:
Directions:
Heat oven to 325 degrees

Cream together shortening and sugar. Add eggs and beat well. Add apples and let set for 30 minutes. Stir together flour, soda, cinnamon and salt. Add to apple mixture, add nuts and vanilla. Bake for 45 to 50 minutes in a 9 x 13 pan.

Combine butter and sugars and cook over low heat until boiling. Remove, cool slightly and add cream and vanilla. Serve cake with warmed butter sauce.

Combine 1/2 cup butter, 1/2 cup brown sugar and 1/2 cup white sugar. Cook over low heat until boiling. Remove, cool slightly and add 1/2 cup half and half and 1 tsp. vanilla or rum.
