2 c. all-purpose flour 1/2 c. granulated sugar 2 tsp. baking powder 3/4 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. baking soda 1/3 c. shortening 1 beaten egg 1/2 c. buttermilk
Topping: 1/2 c. brown sugar 2 tsp. cinnamon 2 tbsp. melted butter 1/2 c. chopped pecans
Preheat oven to 350º. Combine topping ingredients. Sift together flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and soda. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse meal. Combine egg and buttermilk; stir into the flour mixture. Spread into a greased and floured 8-inch round or square cake pan. Sprinkle with topping and bake at 350° for 30 minutes.
