4 c. sweet milk
1/2 c. butter
1 c. sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
1 cake yeast dissolved in 2 c. whey or potato water
flour

For syrup:
sugar
water

Directions:
Directions:
Scald milk enough to melt butter. Add sugar, salt, yeast and flour enough for sponge. Let rise until light; add flour and mix stiff; let rise again. Roll into strips about 8 inches in length and twist into figure eights. Bake immediately in oven at 400º, turned to low when put in. Bake slowly until light brown. Remove and dip in thin syrup made from sugar and water for glaze. Let dry and keep in a stone jar.
