As sisters, Peggy and Faye loved making mud pies. When they lived on the farm they became quite professional bakers on how the soil would react with water and what they could make that resembled some foods. It usually was cookies or muffins. When they moved to Portage they brought their old containers and set up their new post to start up their "mud" kitchen. The soil from this area of the province reacted a little different and their culinary arts included cakes. Sponge cakes were the specialty. If the mud was mixed just right with water they could actually get the cake out of tins and it would even last all day before the sun dried it up.
