2 cups brown sugar
3/4 cup shortening
2 eggs
1 pound dates
pinch salt
3 1/2 cups flour
1/2 tsp vanilla
1 1/2 tsp soda
1 1/2 tsp cream of tartar
1/2 cup nuts

Directions:
Directions:
to the pound of finely chopped dates add 3/4 cup of sugar and 3/4 cup of water, cook until thick, cool, sift dry ingredients, mix well
divide dough into 2 parts, roll out, spread with date dope, sprinkle with finely chopped nuts, roll up and chill over night---cut and bake on greased cookie sheet 6-8 minutes@ 375 or until lightly brown
