Bread and Butter Pickle Recipe

1 gal. cucumbers
8 small onions
2 green peppers - all sliced paper thin
1/2 c. salt
2 tbsp. alum

5 c. sugar
1 1/2 tsp. turmeric
2 tbsp. mustard seed
5 c. mild vinegar
1/2 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. celery seed

Put 1/2 c. salt, 2 tbsp. alum on pickles and leaving ice cubes in them. Let stand at least 3 hours. Drain.
Boil syrup 5 minutes. Pour over pickles. Set low heat. Scald but don't boil. Seal in hot jar.
