Cindy's "Most Excellent" Lasagna Recipe

1 lb. sweet or hot italian sausage
1 lb. ground beef
1/2 c. finely chopped onion
2 cloves of garlic, minced
2 T. sugar
1 tsp. salt
1 1/2 tsp. dried basil leaves
1/2 tsp. italian seasoning
1/4 c. chopped parsley
2 cans of diced tomatoes, not drained
2 6 oz. cans tomato paste
12 lasagna noodles
1 16 oz. ricotta cheese
1 egg
1/2 tsp. salt
4 c. shredded mozzarella
3/4 c. grated parmesan

Directions:
Directions:
Saute sausage, beef, onion and garlic, stirring frequently. Add sugar, salt, basil, seasoning and 1/2 parsley. Add tomatoes and tomato paste and bring to a boil. .Reduce heat and simmer on stove, stirring occasionally, until thick (as long as you have - 1 1/2 hours).

Cook lasagna noodles with salt, drain and rinse with cold water. Lay flat.

Preheat oven to 375.

Combine ricotta, egg, remaining parsley and salt and mix well.

In bottom of pan, spoon 1/3 of sauce. Then layer with 6 lasagna noodles, overlapping. Spread noodles with 1/2 ricotta mix, top with half of mozzarella. Then another 1/3 sauce, 1/2 of parmesan, 6 noodles, ricotta mix, 1/3 sauce, parmesan and mozzarella.

Bake covered with foil for 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake for 25 minutes more or until bubbly. Cool 15 minutes before serving.

Can also add red pepper flakes for spice.

Can freeze before baking, and sauce is also great for other pasta if you want to make extra.
