1 1/2 c. sugar
1 1/2 c. water
1/4 t. cinnamon
1/4 t. nutmeg
6-10 drops red food coloring
3 tbsp butter or margarine
2 c. flour
2 t. baking powder
1 t. salt
2/3 c. shortening
1/2 c. milk
6 med. apples (if left whole; otherwise 3-4)

Directions:
Directions:
Combine sugar, water, spices, and food coloring; bring to a boil. Remove from heat; add butter. Combine dry ingredients; cut in shortening till mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add milk all at once and stir just until flour is moistened.
On lightly floured surface, roll about 1/4" thick into 18x12" rectangle. Cut into 6" squares. Place apple slices in each square(about1/2 apple). You can also use a whole cored apple, Sprinkle each apple generously with sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg; dot with butter. Moisten edges of squares. Fold in corners to center and pinch edges together. Place 1" apart in ungreased 11 1/2 x 7 1/2 x 1 1/2" pan. Pour the syrup over dumplings; sprinkle with sugar. Bake at 375º for 35 min. or until apples are done. Serve warm with cream.

At the farm, we had this scrawny little apple tree. That little tree produced more apples! These apple dumplings were a favorite way to use them.
