Ingredients: 1 1/2 c milk 2 pkg dry yeast 1/2 butter room temp 1/2 c sugar 1 egg 3 egg yolks 1 t vanilla 1/2 mace or nutmeg 1 t salt 4 1/2 c flour (about) oil for deep frying Confectioners' sugar

Directions:Heat milk to luke warm sir in yeast to dissolve. Beat butter and sugar till fluffy. beat in egg, then yolks one at a time. Mix in vanilla, mace or nutmeg and salt. gradually beat in flour and milk mixing well. cover, place in warm place to rise till doubled. Punch dough down and let rise again. Turn out to lightly floured board. Knead till smooth and elastic and roll out to 1/2 thickness. With donut cutter or glass cut out. Cover and let rise til doubled In hot oil fry a few at a time. Brown on one side then turn to brown the other (1 to 2 min. ) Drain on paper towel and top with confectioners' sugar. To make as grandpa : cut 2 1/2 in circles, place 1 t filling on top and moisten edges with milk. Top with another circle and pinch edges together. If you have a pastry tube you can just punch a hole with the tip and force filling in after frying. Grandpa's favorite filling was prune mixed with rum for thet extra something! |
