"As I ate the oysters with their strong taste of the sea and their faint metallic taste that the cold white wine washed away, leaving only the sea taste and the succulent texture, and as I drank their cold liquid from each shell and washed it down with the crisp taste of the wine, I lost the empty feeling and began to be happy, and to make plans."--Ernest Hemingway

1/4 c butter
1 c firmly packed light brown sugar
1 egg
3/4 c flour
1 t baking powder
dash of salt
1 t vanilla extract
1 c chopped walnuts

Preheat oven to 350. Generously grease an 8" square baking pan.

Over heat, melt butter and add the brown sugar. Cook, stirring constantly for 30 seconds, or until well blended. Cool*, then add the egg.

Combine the flour, baking powder and salt, and add to the brown sugar mixture. Stir in the vanilla and walnuts. Spread into the prepared baking pan.

Bake for 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool and cut into squares.

*Note: When cooling the melted butter mixture, place pan into cold water. This allows the cooling to occur more rapidly.
