Dough:
1 3/4 cups oatmeal
1 3/4 cups flour
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup melted shortening (margarine)
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon salt.
Filling:
1 package dates
1 cup boiling water
1 cup brown sugar

Directions:
Directions:
Mix dry ingredients with melted shortening and 1/2 of dough mixture in 9x11 pan.
Mix filling and cook until thickened.
Pour over dough in pan and spread the rest of the dough over the filling. Bake in 350 oven until brown about 25 minutes.
Cut into squares and serve.
