1 1/4 c. packed brown sugar
1 T. cornstarch
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
1/4 c. butter or margarine
2 c. flour
1/4 granulated sugar
1 tsp. baking powder
1/3 c. shortening
3 c. chopped, peeled tart apples
3/4 c. milk
1 T. granulated sugar
1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
2 c. cold water

Mix brown sugar, cornstarch, and 1/8 tsp. salt. Add 2 c. cold water; cook till bubbly. Cook and stir 2 minutes more. Add 1 tsp. vanilla and 2 T. butter or margarine. Pour into 9x13x2" baking dish. Combine flour, the 1/4 c. granulated sugar, baking powder and 1/2 tsp. salt. Cut in shortening. Stir in apples. Stir in milk and remaining vanilla till moistened. Drop by tablespoonfuls over syrup. Combine the 1 T. granulated sugar and cinnamon; sprinkle over top. Dot with remaining butter. Bake at 350º.
