1/2 cup shortening
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 Tbls cocoa
1/2 oz red food coloring
2 cups sifted flour
1 cup buttermilk
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp vinegar
1 tsp baking soda
2 eggs

Directions:
Directions:
Cream sugar and shortening. Add eggs one at a time. Add cocoa and coloring - beat. Add flour and salt with buttermilk, add vanilla and beat. Pour vinegar over soda and quickly add to batter. Bake in round layer cake pans at 350º for 25 minutes. Frost with Cream Cheese Frosting or Waldorf Astoria icing (below):
3/4 cup cooled scalded milk
1 egg white
1 cup sugar
1/2 tsp Crisco
1/2 tsp butter
1 tsp vanilla
Beat egg white and sugar. Cream Crisco & butter in separate bowl. Combine both mixtures and add milk and vanilla.
