1/3 c. butter
1 c. chopped celery
1 c. chopped onion
1/2 c. grated carrots
1/3 c. flour
4 c. chopped tomatoes
2 tsp. sugar
1 tsp. basil
1 tsp. marjoram
1 bay leaf
4 c. chicken broth
2 c. milk
1/4 tsp. pepper
1/2 tsp. paprika (optional)

Saute first four ingredients. Stir in flour. Add tomatoes, sugar, broth and spices. Cover and simmer for 30 minutes. Discard bay leaf. Puree mixture, 1/3 at a time in blender. Pour back in pot and add milk. Stir in pepper and paprika. Add salt to taste.
