1/4 c. molasses
3/4 c. shortening [crisco, not butter or margarine]
1 c. granulated sugar
1 egg
2 tsp baking soda
2 and 1/4 c. flour
1 tsp. cinnamon
3/4 tsp. ginger
3/4 tsp. cloves
1/2 c. each raisins and walnuts

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375º

Mix shortening, sugar, egg, and molasses thoroughly. Stir in remaining ingredients, raisins and nuts last.

On ungreased cookie sheet, shape into three rolls Press down. Bake 9 or 10 min. Sprinkle immediately with granulated sugar. Allow to cool and cut into bars.

I do not use nuts as everyone in my family does not like them. Instead of raisins, I use currents as they are smaller and spread throughout the dough better.
I also use more than one cookie sheet so the dough does not run together when cooking.
