Meatballs:
1 pound ground pork
1 1/2 pounds ground beef
1 cup bread crumbs
5 to 6 tablespoons olive oil
1 medium onion, chopped
5 to 6 large cloves garlic, finely chopped
2 1/3 teaspoons salt
2 eggs
black pepper or red pepper flakes to taste
3/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (Kraft in the jar works well)
1/2 cup fresh parsley
1 1/2 teaspoons dried oregano

Tomato sauce:
42 ounces canned tomatoes (whole or crushed or a combination)
18 ounces canned tomato paste
5 cups water
2 bay leaves
1/2 cup fresh basil (reduce the amount if using dried)
1 medium onion, chopped
5 to 6 cloves garlic, finely chopped
2 teaspoons oregano
1/2 cup fresh parsley
2 teaspoons salt
black or red pepper flakes to taste

Meatballs (about 24 medium to large):
Saute onion and garlic in 2 to 3 tablespoons of olive oil (careful not to burn the garlic). Combine the pork, beef, bread crumbs, Parmesan, eggs, parsley, oregano, onion, garlic, salt, and pepper. Form into balls and brown on all sides in 2 to 3 tablespoons of olive oil.

Tomato sauce:
Saute onion and garlic in 2 to 3 tablespoons of olive oil. Combine onions, garlic, tomatoes, tomato paste, water, bay leaves, basil, oregano, parsley, salt, and pepper. Simmer uncovered on the stove for 2 to 3 hours, stirring often.
