1 lb. chopped dates
2 tsp. baking soda
3 T. butter
3 eggs, beaten
2 tsp. vanilla
1 c. chopped walnuts (optional)
½ tsp. salt
1 ¾ c. boiling water
1 ½ c. sugar
1 ½ c. flour

Directions:
Directions:
Put dates, nuts, soda, salt and butter in a bowl. Pour boiling water over top. Let stand 5 minutes. Add eggs and sugar; mix thoroughly. Beat in flour and vanilla. Bake in 5 round cans that are greased and well-floured. Cans MUST have yellow lining. Bake at 350º for 1 hour.

I use the cans that pie filling comes in. These are the only ones I’ve found that have a yellow lining.
