1/2 c. butter, softened
1 c. sugar (I add a little more)
1 egg
2 Tbsp. milk or cream
1/2 tsp. vanilla extract

2 c. all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp. salt
2 tsp. baking powder

granulated sugar

Directions:
Directions:

Combine butter, sugar, egg, milk and vanilla extract and beat until light and fluffy.

Combine flour, salt and baking powder and stir into creamed mixture, mixing well.

Chill dough thoroughly.

Roll out small portions of the dough at a time on lightly floured board. Leave the rest of the dough chilling until needed. Cut rolled out dough with a 3-inch cookie cutter. Sprinkle generously with granulated sugar.

Place on a lightly greased cookie sheet and bake at 375º for 8 minutes. Cool and store in tightly covered containers.


Mom and I made these for the first time for my kindergarten class on Valentine's Day in 1979. I've made them nearly every Valentine's Day since.
