2 cups rolled oats or quick cooking oats 2 cups boiling salted water (2 tsp. salt) 1 tbsp shortening 1 yeast cake 1/4 cup warm water 1 tsp sugar 1/3 cup brown sugar or corn syrup 1/2 cup water 4 1/2 cups flour
Stir oats in to boiling salted water. Add shortening. Stir until smooth, cool to lukewarm (about 1 hour). Crumble yeast into bowl, add warm water and sugar. Let stand until dissolved, then combine with lukewarm oatmeal mixture. Stir in brown sugar (or corn syrup) dissolved in water. Work in flour.
