1/2 lb butter
5/8 cup sugar
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 egg
1/2 tsp vanilla
3 1/2 cups flour

Directions:
Directions:
Mix baking soda with the flour. Cream butter and sugar, add egg and blend in vanilla. Add flour and incorporate it into butter mixture. Refrigerate the dough until ready to use. Use dough for cookies, as a base for bars, etc.

Add any other ingredients you would like, such as ground nuts, poppy seeds, orange rind, etc. and adjust the flour accordingly. I wasn't given precise amounts of flour and so I just do it by feel.
