"As I ate the oysters with their strong taste of the sea and their faint metallic taste that the cold white wine washed away, leaving only the sea taste and the succulent texture, and as I drank their cold liquid from each shell and washed it down with the crisp taste of the wine, I lost the empty feeling and began to be happy, and to make plans."--Ernest Hemingway
This recipe for Grandma Houghtaling's Super Rolls, by Nancy Watson, is from The McCormick Family Cookbook,
one of the cookbooks created at FamilyCookbookProject.com. We help
families or individuals create heirloom cookbook treasures.
3 C flour 1 envelope yeast 1 tbsp sugar 2 C warm water 2 eggs 1/3 C shortening 1 tsp salt 4 more C flour (I find 3 1/3 C is enough)
Blend 3 C flour, yeast, sugar and water and let stand 1/2 hour. Add remaining ingredients. Blend, knead. Raise 1 hr. Punch down. Raise 1 hr or until double. Make into rolls. Raise until double (or a little more). Bake at 400ºF in glass pan for 25 min or in aluminum pan for 30 min on shelf in middle of oven.
