1 pkg. dry yeast
1 egg
1/2 c. lukewarm water
1/2 c. sugar
1 T. sugar
2 t. salt
7 c. flour, divided
1/3 c. shortening
2 1/2 c. warm water

Directions:
Directions:
Dissolve yeast in warm water with 1 T. sugar. Let stand until foamy. Add 3 c. flour to 2 1/2 c. water. Stir in yeast. Add egg, sugar, salt, melted shortening and let stand a few minutes. Stir in 3 c. more flour. Add additional flour until not sticky. Knead until smooth and elastic. Place in greased bowl and cover with warm, wet towel. Let rise until double (1 1/2 hr.) Punch down, let rise again 30 min. Shape into dinner rolls, coffee bread, cinnamon rolls or bread. Let rise 30 min. Bake at 375º until nicely browned. Butter tops and let stand in pan 10 min. Makes lg. cakepan of buns plus small pan of sweet rolls.

We all loved Grandma Mabel's rolls but she never had a written recipe. One day I went in and watched her make them and we agreed on ingredient amounts that could be written down.
