1 cup shortening, 2 cups brown sugar, 2 eggs, 3 1/2 cups sifted flour, 1 tsp baking soda, 1/2 tsp salt, 1 tsp cream of tartar, 1 tsp vanilla, & 1 cup finely chopped nuts (I like black walnuts best, but you can use others)

Cream shortening & sugar until smooth & fluffy. Add eggs & beat until light. Sift together flour, soda, salt & cream of tartar. Add to egg mixture & blend well. Mix in vanilla & nuts. Shape in 2 rolls about 2 inches in diameter and wrap in wax paper. Chill in refrigerator several hours. Cut in 1/4 inch slices. Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 375 degrees for 10 - 12 minutes.
