10 0z. chopped dates 1/2 c. sugar 1/4 c. water 1/2 t. vanilla 1 T butter
2/3 c. shortening 1 c. brown sugar 1 t. soda 1 1/2 sifted flour dash of salt 1 1/2 c. oatmeal
Cook dates and cool.
Cream shortening and sugar. Dissolve soda in 2/3 c. boiling water. Sift all ingred. and add alternately with water. Stir in oatmeal. Put 1/2 in greased 8x8 pan and cover with date filling, put rest of mixture on top.
