3 tablespoon unsalted Butter
4 large onions (about 2 1/2 lbs)thinly sliced
1 teaspoon sugar
2 tablespoon all purpose flour
2 cans (14.5 oz each) beef broth
1/4 cup red wine
6 1/2 oz thick slices french bread cut on a slight
diagonial
1/4 pound shreaded gruyere or swiss cheese

© 1) Melt butter in a large , deep pot (one that has a lid) over medium heat. Add onions, and stir to coat with butter.Cover; cook 15 minutes stirring until onions are very soft and begin to turn golden brown.
2) Uncover and increase heat to medium high. Sprinkle with flour stir in sugar, Cook uncovered for 6-7 minutes stiring frequently. Sprinkle with flour and cook 1 minute longer. Stir in broth, wine and 1 cup water. Simmer. uncovered. for 5 minutes.
