2 lbs. cooking apples peeled and sliced (5 1/2 c.)
1/4 cup water
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
1/2 tsp. each - nutmeg and cinnamon
1/4 tsp. salt
3/4 cup all purpose flour
1/2 cup butter

Preheat oven to 350º. Put apples in a shallow 2-qt casserole and add water. Mix remaining ingredients in a bowl to make topping. Crumble topping over apples and bake 30 minutes.

Here are Grandmother's notes verbatim:
As I told you - I use 4 apples for us - use cinnamon instead of nutmeg and I use white sugar or brown - as the spirit moves or what I have in the house. To 4 apples I use 1/2 cup sugar - 1/2 flour and a generous 1/4 cup margarine.
