1 1/2 c. sugar,
1/2 c. shortening,
2 eggs,
2 c. flour,
1 tsp. salt,
1 T. cocoa,
1 c. buttermilk,
2 oz. red food coloring,
1 tsp. vanilla extract,
1 T. baking soda in 1 T. vinegar (makes a chemical reaction)

Mix together first 3 ingredients.
Sift together flour, salt and cocoa three times.
Mix flour alternately with buttermilk.
Add vanilla and red food coloring.
Fold baking soda/ vinegar into mix.
Bake for 25 to 30 minutes at 350.
