For 13" x 9" oblong cake:
2 1/2 c. sifted Gold Medal flour
2 c. sugar
1/4 tsp. baking powder
1 1/2 tsp. soda
1 1/2 tsp. salt
3/4 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. allspice
1/2 c. soft shortening
1/2 c. water
1/2 c. walnuts, cut-up (if desired)
1 c. raisins, cut-up (if desired)
1 1/2 c. applesauce
1 very large egg (1/3 cup)

Heat oven to 350º. Grease and flour pan. Sift together flour, sugar, baking powder, soda, salt cinnamon, cloves, and allspice. Add shortening, water, walnuts and raisins. Beat two minutes. Add applesauce and egg and beat an additional two minutes. Bake 45 to 50 min.
