1 cup sour cream
3 Tbsp. sugar
1/8 tsp. soda
1 tsp. salt
1 cake compressed yeast
1 large egg
2 Tbsp. shortening
3 cups sifted flour
2 Tbsp. softened butter
1/3 cup brown sugar
1 Tbsp. cinnamon
1/2 cup finely chopped nuts (optional)

Frosting:
1 cup powdered sugar
1-2 Tbsp. warm water, milk or cream
1/2 tsp. vanilla or lemon flavoring (can add grated rind to lemon frosting)

Heat sour cream until lukewarm. Remove from heat and stir in sugar, soda and salt. Crumble the yeast into the liquid and stir until dissolved. Add the egg, shortening and flour. Mix well (use hands if necessary). Turn dough onto a floured board and fold over several times until smooth. Then roll with a rolling pin into an oblong that is 24" x 6". Spread the bottom 1/2 of the long side of dough with 2 tbsp. softened butter. Mix brown sugar, cinnamon and nuts together and sprinkle onto buttered dough. Fold the top of the dough over. Cut into 24 strips that are 1" wide. Hold each strip and twist. Place on greased cookie sheet 2" apart. Press both ends of the twist onto the sheet. Let raise for 1 hour. Bake at 375º for 12-15 minutes. Let cool and frost by drizzling frosting over top of twists.
